This piece is timely. We are living in the time of digital disruption. Companies that are disrupted are usually those that think “project” rather than “product” thinking and therefore overvalue “tasks” and undervalue outcomes. In a perfect world, tasks should lead to desirable outcomes. If we work hard, we should get be comfortable with my life, right? Not so fast. There’re so many other factors involved, e.g., other competitors, etc. Project thinking is easy and comfortable. It gives us a peace of mind, a roadmap. But you wouldn’t think that way if you are running a company that could be disrupted any time. You would be constantly reinventing yourself. That is, a project thinking works for employees who are comfortable with whatever stages that their company is in because they don’t have the skin in the game. You probably wouldn’t want anyone who only cares about the outcomes neither because there is a deep sense of uncomfortableness in seeing these people working without your knowing where they’re leading to. We’re wired to want to see the end of the tunnel. So, the best is re-focusing on the outcomes you hope to get and keep in mind to some degree in order to have some comfort in your work, i.e., some of the “essence” of the tasks so that we don’t lose track what is needed to be done, while keeping ourselves adaptable to changes that always, always, and always come.
